A syllabus a requisite document for teaching in that it serves to outline the basic elements of a course including what topics will be covered, a weekly schedule, and a list of tests, assignments, and their associated weightings.

 The definition of a syllabus is a summary of what will be covered in a course of study. An example of a syllabus is what a college professor hands out to his students on the first day of class.

Syllabus" is a word whose etymology from the Latin means "label on a book." The contemporary meaning of the word is something to the offect of "summary outline of a course of study. " A course syllabus is to a great extent a contract between a student and a teacher.

 It lists the topics you will study, as well as the due dates of any coursework including tests, quizzes, or exams. Your professors will give you a syllabus for each of your college classes. Read each one carefully to learn about grading policies, professor office hours, and everything else you need to know.

A syllabus is most effective when it welcomes students to class, affirms students' ability to master course content, indicates the instructor's support for student success, and demystifies the course for students. The language of the syllabus should be encouraging and welcoming instead of punishing and unwelcoming.

  Perhaps most important, your syllabus is the "constitution" of your course; it is a contract that binds both you and your students. It details what you are going to give them and why. It specifies what is expected of them and how you are going to assess their efforts.
